About twelve years ago, I was a charter member of The Washougal School District Foundation in Washougal, WA. I’ve been on a lot of boards and committees in the twelve years since that event, but something from that experience made a tremendous impact on me. The Washougal Foundation studied a Lutheran Family Services Report that listed quantifiable assets that children require to be healthy and well adjusted. These included things such as: Does the child have a place to discuss life issues? Is there an adult who knows and interacts with the child on a regular basis? et cetera. I remember the School District Superintendent stressing that a child who is part of a church and active in a Youth Group automatically had a high level of assets.
